Obscurity

This morning, after several delicious springlike days, I awoke to find the whole of the Pewsey Vale veiled in an impenetrable mist. Very unusual, but no more so than the quirky weather that we (and the rest of the planet) have been experiencing for some time.

The mist over the Vale obscures the landscape while many things, deliberate and accidental, serve to obscure the view of the yearly crop circle miracle. Wiltshire County Council publishes a beautiful magazine extolling the many delights of the county. The crop circles are never ever mentioned. The circles bring an annual revenue to the area of over six million pounds. (This is not a guesstimate but can be justified). Why is the subject so assiduously ignored?

Culmination

When I saw the Salinas/Chualar, California formation I was, like many of us, impressed. Out of nowhere the word “culmination” attached itself and stayed. The date seemed important; the crop circle phenomenon is aware of our calendar and has often made use of it. A huge and elaborate formation at the very end of 2013 and the insistence of culmination led me to believe that this was a powerful signal of an ending, a symbolic conclusion to the bleak train wreck of the 2013 season.

The other reason I was impressed was the assurance and the intent of the design.

I was fooled. It is not the first time and it will not be the last. It is a small reassurance to know that it is the highest aspiration of the man-made gang to mislead us. But this was the emperor of all deceptions. A micro chip development company called nVidia (not invidious) set up a PR scam to publicise the launch of their new chip. A large crop circle broadly replicating the chip in question was stomped into a field. The farmer was paid and lied about it. A photographer flew overhead, took pictures and made a video. She was paid to lie about it. Two young men, driving by at night, made a video of (pre-arranged) flashing green lights and went in the field, to excitedly “discovering” the crop circle. They were paid and they lied.

And finally, our very own Rob Irving and John Lundberg were flown to California to plank it down. They were paid $30,000.
In the nVidia produced video we see Irving and Lundberg proudly discussing their activity. Like Williams they appear cheerless, depressed and dead-eyed. It is pitiful that, at their age, this is all they have to show. They talk portentously of their role as “artists”. They are confidence tricksters, con-men, and con artists. In the real art world they would be forgers – a criminal activity. Irving speaks of “a creative partnership between us and our audience.” He is both pretentious and deluded.
This is why “culmination” is such an appropriate word now. This event marks the ultimate essence of the hoax endeavour. Limitless cash, maximum deceit, widespread lying and hollow, pompous ponouncements.
Could anything more clearly expose the whole vile enterprise? Could anyone any longer be serious about man made circles
