Schmallenberg Virus
Here in the Pewsey Vale the winter has been unusually kind to us. We have come to expect real winter in February but this year has been springlike and remarkably mild, even warm. Everything is green, the tramlines already showing clearly in our lovely crop circle fields.
And now the bad news. Something called the Schmallenberg Virus is moving across the sheep farms of the country and it has now reached us in the west country. It is harmless to humans but it attacks pregnant ewes and produces stillborn or deformed lambs. There is no vaccine as yet and there is talk of it also affecting cows. Currently this is an unresolved and open question and certainly a further strain on the farming community.
